So these are the parts for the crook. (Except the pvc obviously...) Everything in the staff is held together by the pvc cement.

The overall height of the crook is about 13". About a 1/2" of the pipe is inside the elbows on each side.

I'm 5'5" and the whole staff comes about 3" above my head. The length of the staff depends on your own height.

Okay, so the tape gives the staff its texture, more on this later.

Just a close up of the bottom with paint.

Okay, guys, HERE IT IS~ The tutorial for Jack’s staff. I’ve never really made a a how-to before, but I hope it’s helpful. Here’s the materials that I just copied from my other post. Everything can be found at your local home improvement store.

The pvc, and cement are most likely all in the same isle.

**It’s best to have a good estimate of the lengths you’d like if you don’t have/ aren’t planning on buying a saw, so you can have the people at the store cut it for you.**

**Also: I don’t know if it was just my local Home Depot, but a lot of the fittings were all mixed up in their boxes, so make sure you check you have what you need.**

8ft of 3/4inch pvc pipe (There was extra.)

8 ft of 1/2 pvc (Also, a bunch left over but I messed up too, so I was glad I had the extra.)

1 3/4in cap

1 1/2in cap

2 3/4in 45 degree elbows

1 3/4 to 1/2in reducer

2 1/2in 45 degree elbows

All-Purpose pvc cement

I went through about 1 1/2 rolls of tan masking tape…

Brown spray paint. (I used Rustoleum Multicolored Textured in Autumn Brown. I just picked this, because it had a few different shades of brown, and was matte, which was important.)

Also, some brown paint for touchups.

White paint. (I don’t think using spray paint would be the best idea, because it’s not really all that concentrated on the staff. I just used some white acrylic paint i had lying around.)

OPTIONAL!

I tried brushing some textured silver spray paint before I did the white, and I think it gave a bit of dimention, but this is completely optional~

Also used some white sparkle glue I had to make the snow look frostier.

All in all, the whole thing cost me about $20.

Step 1: GET YO SHIT TOGETHER.

So, when you’ve got all of your materials together, pipe cut to the correct measurements (play around a little bit, if you feel like it’s too long, cut it! Although, obviously, if you’re conflicted about the way something looks, go for the longer of two measurements, first and then, see what it looks like. The shaft of the whole thing on mine, was 62” long, but adjust it to suit yourself.

STEP 2 : GHETTO GLUING TIME.

When you think you’re happy with how everything measures up, it’s time to glue! PVC Cement isn’t really a glue, it actually melts the pvc together and you cannot get these pipes apart after you do this, so make sure that you’re absolutely happy. Refer to the the first and second pictures for the placement of the pieces. I recommend starting with the piece of pipe that starts closest to the staff and working up, and cluing the 3/4” cap to the bottom last.

To glue, just swab the outside of the pipe that’s going inside the fitting, and the inside of the fitting, then push the two together, give a little twist, remembering to keep everything in line, wipe off the excess, and move on to the next piece. On the short piece of the crook (The green part of the 2nd picture), I used a heat gun to bend the pvc, and get a few more degrees. You can just as easily out it over a gas burner, and carefully do it. When you’re done, there’s no waiting time for it to dry, go ahead and start taping.

STEP 3: GRAB YO TAPE, SON. IT’S ABOUT TO GET MESSY ALL UP IN HERE.

Even though the tape is really important, it’s probably the easiest part of the whole thing. The trick to getting the staff not to look like pieces of pipe stuck together is giving it dimension, and unevenness. Start at the top, and just begin to wrap the while thing, leave no surface smooth. Then overlap the tape in a diagonals to create little pockets, and then tape over that. When you’ve finished a section, crunch the tape down with your hands down so you get the barky-effect. Create kinks in the tape, then wrap it. Also, in some areas really overlap it, to make it look like a knot in the wood. I had the biggest ones near the bottom, and near the crook, but the entire staff had little bumps here and there. Just go for it! If you get the tape all tangled up, just wrap it around, and tape over it. the extra piece that sticks out of each of the joints was just a piece of news paper wrapped in tape, and then taped onto the staff.

STEP 4: … ACTUALLY THIS IS REALLY THE MESSY PART, BUT WHATEVER. TIME TO PAINT.

Once you feel satisfied with your taping job. Break out the brown spray paint. Go outside, and paint this sucker. I did it in two batches. The first was the crook and the area around it, and the bottom, so I had a spot to carry it inside. I waited a day, and then did the middle, and and touching up the top. One can was just enough to get a really solid coat.

So, then we wait another day, and get out the white acrylic, and optional silver spray paint and glitter. Use some regular brown paint to touch up places that the spray paint couldn’t quite get to, but don’t stress over anything, it can be covered in frost later. If you’re doing the silver, I’m not relly sure I’d recommend doing it the way I did, but I sprayed some silver into a ~~cup~~ all over my hands. Then, I got a coarse brush and began to dab the paint onto the long part of staff and proceeded to smear it all over, because my hands were already covered in silver. It kinda just created a metalic film that looked remotely frosty. this is really light though, and you can only see it if you look closely in the right light.

Then, me being the impatient person that I am, i didn’t wait for that to dry, and got a tiny brush and started brushing on the white with really light, fast, horizontal strokes. This was pretty cool, because it showed off all the crevices and imperfections in the tape, and made it look branchey.once again, I smeared it a bit with my hands to get it to look more natural, but this is completely optional, too.

I concentrated white on the joints of the crook, because I’m doing this for a human!Jack cosplay, and since he doesn’t have his powers, the frost isn’t radiating from the middle, but it kist kind of looks like a branch that’s been left outside. But do whatever for your own staff, and try to make it look as natural as possible by fading out the white, and try not to glob on the paint.

If you choose to use glitter, put it wherever you feel like it should go. (In small doses, I might add.) I put it on the whitest parts.

Let it dry, and the next day, you should be able to run around the house with it, and scream christmas songs in your family’s ears, and put ice cubes down their shirts, because, hey, you’re now Jack Frost with a badass staff. You can do anything~
